I am planning to do some sort of staff development where I teach, share, and disseminate the knowledge about how to do a minor data audit to disseminate my experience, and to encourage a degree of understanding to do with our digital impact. It would also be a way to communalise the data gathering — collecting data in a citizen science kind of way — to democratise the gathering of information. This would in a way to circumvent ethical frictions, as data would be gathered on themselves. It would also serve as an opportunity to discuss small iterative steps which could be useful.
Below is the 90min lesson plan, and data vis of the email journey again I will be using in it.

As part of this research action, I will be collaborating with members of staff from CSM, and as part of Earth Day 2025 we will do a mass email deletion and digital cobwebs clear-out event
With the Climate Network, Carbon Literacy, George, Anna, and Jamie we met during the Carbon Literacy training in 2023 and planned to do this, but are now only getting it off the ground. Its action into fruition is catalysed by this Action Research Project.

I will personally make small, iterative but empirical and measurable changes, to my digital practice.
What has been both interesting and inspiring is that throughout this project, and through sharing it within the PgCert cohort, people have said to me, ‘oh I didn’t sent that email’, or ‘I send a reaction on Outlook rather than replying’ these tiny, but essential acts of transition show that yes, the impact of sending an email is statistically meaningless, but it does all add up. Its kind of how we ever got into this mess.
One example is that I had been nagging my line manager about following up on technical services to get me a laptop upgrade as I’ve had my current one for 4.5years.
It works fine, just can be a little slow here and there, but generally fine. This project has made me rethink this — it is perfectly fit for purpose, I can use design software, render low complexity videos, and everything else. If it can’t do what I need it to — I can use the powerful computers that are usable in any of the UAL sites if I need to render video, etc.
Just to be clear: not flying, changing what I eat and ensuring my home and hot water are heated from renewable sources, or not heating it at all, make significantly more impact, all the same, any action is generally a positive one.
